‘Internet of Everything’ to Reach $14.4 Trillion

Cisco predicts $14.4 trillion could be unlocked in economic value for companies worldwide in the ‘Internet of Everything’. According to a recent article in CBR Online:

Although 45% of the new interactions will be facilitated by machine-to-machine (M2M) collaboration, more than 50% will come from people to devices or person-to-person collaboration.

 The Internet of things refers to the rapid growth in the number of smart devices including industrial machines, cars, appliances and mobile devices that communicate with each other, generating massive amounts of data.

The fact that Cisco is building and securing a division dedicated to the Internet of things is a strong industry indicator. They obviously share our view that it is an area of huge potential.

This leads me to beg the question: what will the outcome of all this be? As Cisco CEO, John Chambers rightly points out, this will generate massive amounts of data. And, when it comes to M2M collaboration in particular, how will companies control the cost and complexity of distributing this amount of data quickly and in a scalable fashion?
