Fast Data Needs to be Fast End to End

Talk to any of the integration vendors today and they will, at some point, mention fast data. The analysts will do the same. Go back a few years and the conversation was all about big data,  the notion that events and business processes occurring and running both within and outside of your organisation generated huge quantities of data that, somehow, needed to be stored and processed. The processing of these huge quantities of data would lead to a greater understanding  of how your business was operating and how your customers were behaving. The only problem was that the insights generated were already out of date, what is the point in realizing that a customer is dissatisfied 2 weeks after they have already taken their business elsewhere.

Enter fast data, the concept of processing these events as they occur and generating actionable insights immediately. Type ‘fast data architecture’ into your favorite search engine and you will delivered a whole raft of results, for example the ‘lambda architecture’ designed by Nathan Marz, but most seem to have one thing in common: they end in some form of data store or analytics engine with users accessing the results via traditional web or desktop applications.

Fast Data As Is

That really shouldn’t be the end of the story, the whole point of fast data is to provide the ability to react to events immediately, not just to analyse them and store the results of that analysis. The reaction to an event occurring could be automated or it can be a human task: it can invoke a service, start a human centric business process or it could be sending a message to a mobile app in order to  tell someone to do something. It could be all three. What these fast data architectures are missing is that last step, delivering data and actionable insights to people on the move, on their mobile devices, anywhere in the world.

End to End Fast Data

Diffusion Cloud and Diffusion by Push Technology provide that last step in the end-to-end fast data architecture. They extend the architecture outside of the firewall to the public internet and mobile networks, managing the unreliabiity and reducing the data sent by up to 90%.
